| | Good morning.. Personal income data shows a 0.3 percent increase in September—a sign that workers are being paid more, likely thanks to low unemployment making for a tight job market. Spending rose just 0.2 percent, slightly below expectations. Some see that as a sign of a slow economy.
However, if workers are making more but also saving more, we avoid some of the problems with consumers being overly leveraged than we've seen in the past. In fact, the personal savings rate, which was negative in the mid-2000's when housing was booming, sits at a respectable 8.1 percent right now. It's when that rate gets low—or even negative again—that the economy truly gets into serious trouble.
