Top 10 Cities Pricing the Middle Class Out of Real Estate

Right now, the American dream of owning a home seems to be getting further and further out of reach for much of the middle class. I wrote about this on Wednesday when I explained that San Francisco real estate prices are the least of our worries.

Signs of the beginning of the end of this historic real estate bubble are everywhere, least of which is that middle-class households all over the country are really feeling the pinch in terms of cost-of-living.

Take the San Francisco metro area for example, where a household needs an income of at least $188,000 to afford an average two-bedroom house or apartment, assuming no more than 30% of income is spent on housing.

Well, here’s the problem… the median income in the San Francisco metro area is only just above $96,000, which makes housing unaffordable by over 80%!

And this isn’t even the worst example of unaffordability in the U.S.

In our latest infographic, we look at the 10 metro areas in the U.S. most cost-burdened by renting or owning a home.

All the areas included on this list are also included in U.S. News & World Report’s most recent Top 20 Most Desirable Cities.

With a real estate bubble this inflated, a painful correction is due to hit. Click the image below to find out what areas of the country will fall the hardest when this bubble inevitably bursts.

#IPOs In Peak Digital Advertising

Digital advertising is supposed to be the fuel of the future, funding new companies (#IPOs) that provide us with services we never knew we wanted – Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, etc. – while tearing away at our privacy. But there's a problem. Digital advertising is annoying users, and starting to creep us out. I don't want...

The Link Between the New Zealand and Sri Lanka Tragedies

Last Wednesday, I wrote to you about the 70-year Globe Buster – the second iteration of the 35-year Geopolitical Cycle that brings with it chaos and global agony during its negative turn. And man! This cycle has truly been brutal. 9/11. Civil wars. The Arab Spring. Mass shootings. White supremacist terror attacks. In fact, more...

Look East for the Next Great Opportunity

I'm travelling to Australia on Sunday for my third six-city tour in 14 months. I've been looking at the countries near them that they export to… and it just keeps reminding me that the biggest opportunity that will come out of the big crash ahead – when the Dark Window slams shut – is going...

The Good Path to Greater Income Inequality

I want the difference between median pay and a top earner to get bigger. A lot bigger. It's not that I want average workers to earn less… I'm just hoping that a top earner can make more. And I've got a specific top earner in mind. It's not Michael Corbat, CEO of Citigroup, who was...
