Volatility Creates This Potential Large Gain

One reason some investors might chose to focus on the long term could be that they perceive risk to be lower in the long run. After all, the major stock market indexes do tend to move higher in most years and average returns are almost always positive over periods that are longer than five years. Given those probabilities, they may assume the short-term risks are large.
While there are risks in the short term, there are strategies that also strictly limit risk in dollar terms.
