REAL ESTATE
Image Source: iStock As mortgage rates continue to fall, more and more homeowners are looking to refinance. This marks the 14th time that rates have reached a record point during 2020.
There were 2% more applicants looking to refinance last week than the week prior. That number is up 89% compared to this time last year. Right now the average interest rate is 2.9% for a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage.
And despite being down slightly last week, initial mortgage applications are still up for the year.
"The purchase market is also poised to finish 2020 on a strong note. Applications fell slightly last week but were around 3% higher than the two weeks leading up to Thanksgiving. Reversing the recent trend, there was also a shift in the composition of applications, with an increase in government loans pushing the average loan balance lower," said economist Joel Kan.
