What's the best gold stock?
That's the million-ounce question...
Which gold stock should you buy and why? There are three schools of thought. - Buy one of the best senior mining companies, like Newmont Corp. (NYSE: NEM), Barrick Gold (NYSE: GOLD) or Kirkland Lake Gold (NYSE: KL). All three companies offer huge reserves, great management teams and excellent correlation with gold prices (and silver prices too).
- Buy precious metals royalty companies, like Wheaton Precious Metals (NYSE: WPM) and Franco-Nevada (NYSE: FNV). These companies don't own a ton of mines but lend others money and get a piece of the action in the form of royalties or streaming. They have small overhead, and their upside is tied to the movement in metals prices.
- Buy junior miners and speculative explorers. They offer huge upside, as they could strike it big at any time, but they are also the biggest losers when they miss. If 1 out of 100 junior miners succeeds, that would be a miracle!
All metals plays have risks attached. But the biggest risk is if prices plummet. That's not likely over the long term, as the U.S. government and global governments are hell-bent on printing as much money as possible.
Since 2017, the government has gone on the biggest spending spree over the shortest period of time, with close to $6 trillion worth of new paper money printed from thin air. And there's more to come.
You can protect yourself with a position in gold that should increase in value as the U.S. dollar and other currencies decrease in value.
The best bet is not to guess which company will do best. With an individual company, you are subjecting yourself to a lot of risk, ranging from bad management to politics and out-of-control spending.
Instead, this is one of those rare cases where I think you should make a bet on the VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE: GDX), which also has silver stocks, the bedrock of your holdings. This way, you get all the upside of gold and silver without the risk of making a single bet on a company. Action Plan: Sure, you can speculate some with the juniors and one or two other companies. But if you're going to bet the ranch, do it with a bunch of ranches in different locations so that when a drought hits, you're not looking at catastrophe.
