By Emma Walsh, Managing Editor, Bill Bonner's Diary This week comes news that two plus two is four is now incorrect. And the term “female” is no longer considered appropriate. We’re all “woke” now. But, Bill asks, are we moving forwards as a society, or backwards? Is this progress? Or is it a slow, almost imperceptible destruction of carefully constructed social structures? Walking through the forests surrounding his new house in Ireland, Bill finds evidence of many structures long since disappeared that were no doubt considered permanent, essential even, when constructed centuries ago. Now tumbled down and covered in thick underbrush, the past seems forgotten… lost forever. But of course, that doesn’t stop your editor from trying to revive it! He wraps up the week with news of Joe Biden’s latest spending plan… and unfortunately, it’s no laughing matter. Regards, Emma Walsh Managing Editor, Bill Bonner’s Diary | Civilization Walks Backward While exploring his Irish property over the weekend, Bill finds many signs of ancient life on the estate. The 1837 Ordnance Survey map shows many features – roads, walls, cottages, stables – that people must have thought were permanent, but which have since disappeared or fallen into disrepair. | | | A Walk in the Woods Two plus two, apparently, no longer equals four. And there are new rules about the use of the English language popping up all the time. Is this progress? And why does progress so often go into reverse? Bill’s walk in the woods today gives us an example of how easily and quickly progress can be erased. | | | A Long Time Forgotten How do we come to forget the things that were once most important to us? It’s simple: If we don’t keep weeding and pruning, pretty soon, the weeds take over. And soon, the important insights and hard-earned lessons of the past are abandoned and forgotten. | | | If Only God Had Thought of It In an unexpected bombshell this morning, the Biden Administration unveiled its most ambitious initiative to date… perhaps the boldest political move since Caligula made his horse, Incitatus, a senator. Bill has all the details... | | | The Joke’s On Us Joe Biden just launched yet another new plan. This one – to cost over $2 trillion – is supposed to boost infrastructure and help us “win the future.” But a quick look under the hood shows it’s just another plan to win more friends and influence voters. There is very little real infrastructure spending going on. It’s just a riot of boondoggles and payoffs. | | | How to Profit from the Last Great Digital Leap Companies like Blockbuster and Amazon forever changed the way we live our lives. But they also generated huge profits for early investors who saw this potential early on. Our colleague at Brownstone Research, Jeff Brown, sees what he calls the “last digital leap” happening right now. And it’s in an industry we will all potentially benefit from (not cryptos!). | | Like what you’re reading? Send your thoughts to feedback@rogueeconomics.com.
