There I was on the 70th floor of a Chicago skyscraper, watching one of the most powerful men in the city stuff lobster into his face.

I had just been promoted to floor trader on the CBOE, and he was what's known as a "market maker" - the kind of guy who moves billions of dollars at a time with a flick of his wrist.

"The thing is, Andrew," he told me in between bites, "we don't make a trade unless it's a sure thing. The big investment banks - the ones you and I work for - they didn't get this big because they're good at picking stocks."

"They didn't?" I asked.

"God, no!" He said, breaking open another lobster claw with a crack. "The big banks get information that the public doesn't - or at least, we get it before the public does. New product launches, earnings, scandals... anything that can really move a stock - we see a lot of that stuff ahead of time."

"So when we make a trade... we pretty much know we're going to make money?"

"Yup."

My head was spinning.

It made perfect sense. This is how banks like JP Morgan and Bank of America go on such amazing winning streaks.

"And here's the craziest part," he said. "We're doing this in broad daylight. Anyone can see what trades we're making if they know where to look. Joe Shmoe out in the suburbs could make the same trades from his living room if he wanted."

Neither of us knew it at the time, but he had just set me on a path from which I'd never return.
