This is called "price discovery," but how do you put a price on the world's most valuable resource?
There was no agreed-upon national price until recently. Water is a local or regional market if you have enough pipelines or irrigation canals. But there is no national distribution pipeline for water like there is for oil, natural gas and even electricity.
This means water can be super cheap in some places and super pricey in others. So just this month, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange launched its first-ever futures contract for water on the Nasdaq Veles California Water Index (NQH20).
The futures contract is based on the California water market, so it's based on a regional price. But this provides a baseline — an official "benchmark" — for the price of water. Having a benchmark allows companies, utilities, regulators and other players in the market to have a better handle on their own local and regional prices.
This is a huge deal. Something like this has never existed before. And it will help push along the idea of investing in the world's most valuable resource in a bigger and fast-growing marketplace. | | | | What Q3 Earnings Season Teaches Investors | Earnings season is now well underway. Nearly a fifth of the S&P 500 Index has reported their financial progress over what has been a tough year for businesses globally. With 20% of reports now priced into the stock market, we have a better picture of the economy's health and how investors should be tackling the market.
In the overall stock market, earnings are down roughly 11% from one year ago, whereas, 86% (more than four out of five companies) of companies that have reported so far have beaten their earnings estimates. A contextual key to keep in mind is that those estimates have been revised and beaten down to keep expectations low in a year where the pandemic has plagued the large majority of businesses.
Unemployment rates are still diverging from the stock market prices.
The sectors with the weakest Q3 earnings have been transport, energy and consumer discretionaries — all for pretty obvious reasons. The sectors that have shown the most resilience during these times have been utilities, technology and retail, with online retailers doing a lot of the heavy lifting in that sector. | | | "Thank you so much for your consolation. By the way, I always like your presentations, keep them up."
