In an earnings call on Thursday, Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) announced that it is increasing its investment in autonomous and electric vehicles to $29 billion through 2025. Previously, Ford planned on spending $11.5 billion on EVs through 2022.

The automaker stated that it is planning on producing mostly battery-electric vehicles and will release an electric version of its popular F-150 pickup truck sometime next year.

Chart - Total Projected Spending for Valentines Day
 

Nearly 75% of Americans plan to celebrate Valentine's Day this year. That's a huge jump from last year's 55%.

Still, that doesn't mean three-quarters of the country is coupled up.

The list of "loved ones" has expanded beyond just significant others. The category now includes children, friends, teachers, co-workers and pets.

In fact, total spending is expected to reach $21.8 billion.

And thanks to the holiday, five companies are expected to see a big sales boost this quarter.
