Now, let's dig in! Image Source: CNBC U.S. stocks increased on Thursday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing .4% and the S&P 500 rising .5%, and the Nasdaq Composite increasing .7%.
Today the Labor Department issued its latest look at initial jobless claims, and the data far exceeded what analysts had anticipated. There were 885,000 new filings for unemployment assistance, versus the 808,000 claims that economists had expected.
"Until [the virus] is more under control. Claims are going to continue to be elevated," a Jefferies money market economist explained.
The increasing number of cases has meant stricter safety measures in some places, impacting the labor market in a big way. And the numbers have continued to increase, with over 247,000 new reported cases yesterday.
Meanwhile, in Congress, lawmakers are determining whether compromise can be achieved and a stimulus bill can be signed before year's end. The latest proposal has a stimulus check included.
