Revealed: Two Secret Ways Companies Give Investors a Buy Signal
Companies give investors a lot of information. For starters, all publicly-traded companies required to report their earnings quarterly. Most companies also put the quarter's earnings in context and provide guidance for coming quarters by providing guidance. It's a lot of numbers for the specific earnings, and a bit of guesswork for their future estimate of performance.

Inside my new book, Peak Trump: The Undrainable Swamp and The Fantasy of MAGA, I reveal what I think has really happened to America since Trump took office. While many investors may trade ahead of earnings, it's a true gamble. For example, company may beat earnings, but have lower guidance going forward, sending shares down. Or a company may miss on earnings, but shares already dropped going in expecting a loss—and may surge instead!

But there are other items that companies disclose to investors, and not always during their earnings report. Some of this news may be a secret signal that their shares are a buy.

One news item that's secretly bullish has to do with layoffs. A company reporting layoffs may sound like it's going through some trouble—and it probably is. But if they can continue to do what they're doing with a smaller payroll, their profitability will improve. While it's bad news for the employees involved, it's a surprising way that companies can help boost their share prices over time. It may not have the immediate impact of a great earnings report, but for large companies, it can provide a real boost to its returns.

Besides layoffs, companies that respond to competitors with new and better product offerings are likely going to see their shares jump as well. These kinds of moves are more likely in the tech space, where things can happen quickly. These kinds of developments occur all the time, well outside a quarterly earnings report. These news items may come in on a quiet day, or be announced on a company blog, or otherwise slip through the cracks—providing investors with an off-the-radar opportunity to find their next winning trade.
